For Mozart, the religious repertoire was more than just an occasional exercise or a mandatory rite of passage, but a genre in its own right which he cultivated regularly throughout his career. In his very early Masses, which already showed signs of promise, the musician demonstrated a mastery of instrumental and vocal polyphony. The Mass in C is influenced by Bach and Handel, especially in the large choruses. Italian influences can also be detected in the solo parts which are straight out of opera, for example in the dazzling Gloria. Although this Mass in C is incomplete, with the exception of the Requiem, it represents Mozart’s sacred music at its very finest.
